Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)
The things we do as parents can show slivers of God’s love to our children, or cause them to grow up not knowing Him. In nearly all cases, when parents make terrible life decisions, it is the children that suffer most, not the parent(s) who caused it.
When a spouse has an extra-marital affair and a child is brought into the world because of it, who is most likely to suffer the most? The child. Is this hindering them from knowing a loving God?
When a couple get married solely based on emotions, they often will have children and later divorce. Who suffers most when this happens? The child. Is this not also hindering them from discovering a holy and loving Father?
When a couple of short-sighted, infatuated young adults don’t follow God’s instructions, and have pre-marital sex that results in an unwanted pregnancy, there is all too often an abortion. Who suffers most when this happens? The child. This forcefully takes even their very breath away from them.
This is no ‘holier-than-thou’ speech – I’ve lived through some of these very examples - from the side of both the child and the parent. I have had to repent of the many horrible mistakes I’ve made that have affected my own children. I write this to plead with others to repent, and do what they can to show the children of the world the true beauty and utterly complete love that comes only from our Father above.
“It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.” (Luke 17:2)
