I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)
God says “Be still, and know that I am God” - doesn’t it make sense that we can more easily connect with Him when we aren’t surrounded by noise and activity? Clearly, sometimes this is unavoidable, but I believe we would all benefit from taking a few minutes every day to just unplug and seek God in the silence.
Turn off the noise (TV, music, games, etc.) and just step outside. Not to catch Pokemon, but to instead catch a glimpse of your Creator! See the trees reaching to the sky, the clouds that drift by, the birds flying through the air. All of these can speak of the glory of God.
How clearly the sky reveals God's glory! How plainly it shows what he has done! (Psalm 19:1)
This is why I am challenging everyone who reads this to just take 15 minutes out of your day (or night) to quiet your mind, step outside, and enjoy God’s handiwork. I call this the “Be Still Challenge”, and I believe that if you can just step away from the circus of life for a moment, you very well may encounter God there.
Remember, Elijah did not find God in the hustle and the bustle, but in the silence.
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:11-12)
Give it a try every day for a week, and listen for the gentle whisper of God as you enjoy His Creation. Who knows, you may just find that you like it!
