“Yes, come,” Jesus said. (Matthew 14:28-29)
We can do anything while our eyes are on Jesus. We can walk on water or turn away from our fears and temptations, but we have to keep our eyes on Him.
But notice what happened – Peter didn’t just jump out and start walking on the water… he asked Jesus first. He knew that if Jesus willed him to walk on the water, it would surely happen. Peter shows us an important lesson here. Ask for God’s will first, because if you are following His desire you are going in the right direction.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. (Matthew 14:30)
Of course, like Peter, we can start out in God’s will but turn our eyes away and focus on other things. When Peter did this, he quickly began to sink. We may be all about pursuing the will of God, but if we turn to focus on the worldly disruption going on around us we can quickly lose sight of the prize and sink in the muck and mire of life.
When that happens, let’s again follow the lesson from Peter – it’s never too late to cry out, “Save me, Lord!”
