The prophet Habakkuk lived at the same time as the famous Daniel – yes, that Daniel – aka ‘Daniel and the lion’s den’. In fact, there is a Jewish story taught that Habakkuk was miraculously brought to dine with Daniel during the very night that he was in the lion’s den. During the meal, Daniel told his fellow prophet about the travails that landed him in the den, and together they praised their God for sparing Daniel from the hungry cats.
Habakkuk was the same prophet that warned his Jewish brethren that God was going to let them be overrun and taken from their homeland. These were two serious prophets of Almighty God! These Old Testament heroes knew their God was just, and also full of mercy. And truly, their God – our God – is to be trusted and praised!
When everything around you seems bleak, remember Daniel, who was saved by God – who didn’t just keep the lions from eating Daniel that night; He also brought Daniel a fellow prophet to dine with him and lift his spirits.
Even the mighty Persian King Darius could not deny the greatness of our Lord! The miraculous events in the lion’s den brought Darius to issue the following decree to his people:
“I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.
“For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.
He rescues and he saves;
he performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.” (Daniel 6:26-27)
Let us all praise the God who saves!
