We know that the seed has no choice in the matter. It grows because that’s what it was designed to do. And since I’m not a botanist, I wouldn’t know what this small seed will turn into either – but the one who planted it knows. As it grows and begins to form a thin trunk and small branches, it’s clear to even an untrained eye like mine that it will be a tree of some sort. What kind of tree? Well, that remains to be seen…
In fact, since I’m not very well-versed on types of trees, even as the trunk thickens and branches extend out; even as leaves are forming; even as small buds begin to appear; I still am likely not to know what this tree is really all about.
But when I walk up to the tree and see a bevy of beautiful Georgia peaches dangling succulently from those branches… well, even a dummy like me will know that we have ourselves a peach tree!
You see, the fruit gives it away. There is no way to hide that there is a peach tree when you see peaches growing on it. And there is no way to hide that there is a disciple of Christ standing when you see their fruit, either.
Only an actual, healthy peach tree will produce good peaches, and only the ones who follow Christ’s message produce heavenly fruit.
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. (Matthew 7:18-20)
