We have people in our ‘orbit’ that can also impact us – for good or ill. This can be a direct consequence of spending time with a person. Or like the ‘butterfly effect’, it may be someone we never meet whose actions change the course of our lives.
It’s easy to forget that we can control ourselves, but not others. Others can have an impact on us, and we can impact them. We can only change our actions and reactions to impact the world for Christ – we cannot force those in our orbit to accept Him, but we can block some of the worldly rocks being thrown at them - by absorbing them ourselves and also choosing not to sling them ourselves.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4)
