If you knew you were having a child – let’s say it’s a boy (congratulations by the way) - and you were given the following choice, which would you make?
Choice 1: Have the child but only for 3 days with you on this earth, at which point the child dies and is taken up to the Bosom of Abraham, where you have the opportunity (after your earthly life is over) to spend all eternity with him in a place of no sorrow, pain, or tears.
Choice 2: Have the child, raise him and watch him grow, but see him never choose Christ as his Savior. He lives a long life, and dies at a ripe old age on this earth, but he spends all eternity without you - and without God.
Which decision would be the best for your child? Which decision would be the most loving when considered from the viewpoint of eternity?
It’s hard to think about what it means to be ‘outside of time’ or to be all-knowing – but that’s right where God is. Without time or uncertainty, many questions or concerns that seem plausible to us take on a completely different meaning.
Here’s an example that I've heard spoken before – “God doesn’t have time to worry about the details of my life.”
On the one hand, this statement has a ring of logic to it. After all, there are and have been billions of people since the beginning, right? Can this Mighty God really worry about every little thing going on in my life?
Not so fast… First, God doesn’t ‘have time’ for anything – He has time for everything! Time is meaningless – he can see every second of every day that has ever happened – always.
Second, He doesn’t ‘worry’ about anything – He is all-knowing so there are no unexpected or unknown events, and His plan is both perfect and guaranteed to happen with precision.
God – knowing and seeing everything – has it under perfect control. So, while decisions like the one I posed at the beginning (a decision I certainly wouldn’t want to have on my plate) are for God alone to make, we can rest assured knowing He has given us a promise that He is doing everything for a reason, and for the good of those who love Him.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)
