What is the name of your god? Notice here that Micah is talking about a ‘god’, not our God. The reality is, everybody idolizes something. Who or what do you worship? Some people worship their spouse, children or ‘significant other’. Some worship their careers or other status symbols.
Micah goes on to say whose Name we are to truly worship:
But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God
Forever and ever. (Micah 4:5b)
It is easy to see the things in this life as all there is. After all, I can see my child or spouse; I can manage my career. But the first and most important things are not of this world. We see these things and hold them, but we must hold them loosely, as they are just blessings provided to us by the One whom deserves our highest praise.
And even though our job or our families are good and important, they cannot be at the top of our list, if we call ourselves disciples of Christ.
The good news is, our God does not put unwieldy or impossible demands on us. He simply wants us to do His good works:
He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly, To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
Who is your God? Choose wisely!
