“You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” (Mark 8:33b)
What Peter and the rest of the disciples heard was their future King admitting defeat before they even got to Jerusalem. This was the Man that was supposed to take care of all their problems, and let them rule beside Him. Their perspective was so very small…
As humans, of course we see things from a human point of view. Our human point of view is what separates us from Jesus. This is why in the very next verse Jesus tells them: “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.”
We must give up ‘our own way’ – our human point of view, and we must accept His way, which is the cross. Our cross may not be a wooden piece of a tree, but really, neither was His. The tree was just an instrument that was used in fulfilling the Goal.
His cross was so much more than that – it was the anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane, the beatings and mockery, and perhaps most of all it was all those surrounding Him that day as He gave everything to save those who knew not what they were doing. Many that would never receive His Gift.
I can’t tell you what your cross is. But I can tell you that everything this world has to offer adds up to absolutely nothing from God’s point of view.
“What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” (Mark 8:36-37)
