In hindsight, the meaning of this statement from Jesus is clear – He is going to die, raise to life, and bring many souls with Him into eternity. But I have to wonder how many that were listening to Him understood what He was saying.
Only a couple of days later, the crucifixion would be the mechanism to ‘plant the Seed’. With tears, His followers would put their friend in the grave. What they didn’t know was that the death of this Kernel was about to explode into new life.
Those who plant in tears
will harvest with shouts of joy.
They weep as they go to plant their seed,
but they sing as they return with the harvest. (Psalm 126:5-6)
Those who loved Jesus were surely weeping as they planted the God-Seed (Jesus). We also weep as we come to the realization that this Holy Kernel was planted for us - He died for us - just as for the disciples of old.
But oh, what rejoicing there will be at that Great Harvest when we are caught up to be with Him forever!
