Having a handle on a train, tram, or bus makes all the difference. It’s the same with life! When sudden starts, stops, curves or bumps of life happen, we need to secure ourselves to something steady and strong that will keep us from lurching around, grasping wildly for anything that we believe might give us at least temporary stability.
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)
Jesus is that Handle. There is nothing this world can throw at us that He can’t get us through. Don't be like the multitude who choose not to secure themselves to a strong fortress, instead looking for security in the fleeting and unstable things of this life.
The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense;
they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. (Proverbs 18:11)
Wealth is easily lost; what was once your source of security can quickly become your source of anxiety! Or perhaps we trust in ourselves… we become proud of our ability to just work our way through anything all on our own.
Haughtiness goes before destruction;
humility precedes honor. (Proverbs 18:12)
We are human – we fail. Even the best of us are far from perfect, far from stable enough to get through everything this life can throw at us. At some point, each of us will find ourselves in need of a strong and immovable handhold. Something to help us find a surefooted and steady path through the sudden starts, stops, curves and bumps that will inevitably come our way. Jesus - our Love Handle - will steady the ride of life.
