My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,
and do not resent his rebuke,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)
As children grow, the discipline changes from a stern voice or tap on the bottom or hand, to losing smartphone or car privileges. What doesn’t change is the reason for the discipline. Disciplining our children is an expression that we love them and want to guide them to understand right from wrong in their decision-making.
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. (Hebrews 12:7-8)
God disciplines His children, not those of another that belong to the world. Claiming to walk with God and never suffering trials or hardship (i.e. discipline) could be a sign that you aren’t stepping out boldly enough in your faith. Without discipline, it's hard to be a disciple!
