I told them about love, and they returned hate. I told them how to gain peace, and they responded with violence. I pointed them to the way of eternal life, and they pursue death with twisted glee.
The children that I brought to life now watch me slowly die. If only they could understand; if they would see how much I love them. But they are like blind beggars walking by a treasure chest – they have no idea what they are missing out on!
My Father, I can accept that people in their selfishness and pride are blinded to my misery, but why have you abandoned me? Please save me from this evil generation!
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Psalm 22:1)
Psalm 22 was written by David approximately 1000 years before Jesus was born in the manger yet clearly describes our Savior’s crucifixion. This was written at a time in history prior to crucifixion even being invented, yet the inspired psalmist references the dislocated bones, the piercing of His hands and feet, the gambling for His clothes, the mocking crowds, the dehydration, and even the haemothorax (the ‘blood and water’ gushing out from the spear thrust into Jesus’ side) that occurred due to severe flagellation and a slow, painful death.
My life is poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax,
melting within me.
My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. (Psalm 22:14-15)
None of these things were known or understood at the time they were written, yet the inspired words of the psalmist describe them in detail one thousand years before it happened.
