All volunteer activities at your local church require incredibly deep, technical proficiency.
Okay, truthfully… if you want to be in the worship band, then you will absolutely need some form of musical talent. But many of the volunteer spots at most churches are relatively low on the ‘special gift needed’ scale. If you are serving as a greeter, helping with communion and offering, or working in the kid’s areas, the most important quality required is your willingness.
Jesus said that we are to let our lights shine before men. He also said not to hide your light. I see way too many Christians sitting in the pews instead of getting up and helping – it’s hard to shine your light if you won’t get off your seat!
Do you remember the story of Moses holding the staff over his head while the army of Israel went to battle?
So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. (Exodus 17:10-13)
Moses had two helpers holding his arms up, and Joshua leading the army. But the whole army was necessary to secure the victory through God’s power! If the four leaders were all that showed up, it wouldn’t have been much of a war, would it?
Leaders (Pastors, Elders, etc.) that look to God and follow His orders are critical to the health of any body of believers. But the entire congregation makes up the army of God, and all must be willing to engage for the Lords glory!
Or as Moses’ protégé Joshua said:
“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15b)
Key word here is “SERVE”! He didn’t say ‘as for me and mine we’ll show up, sit down, and listen once a week’ - he said we will serve! If you aren’t already, won’t you consider serving at your home church?
