One thing that always strikes me when I read these words from Jesus is that the storms strike both the man that follows Him, as well as the man who does not. This is good to remember when you hear someone preaching ‘prosperity gospel’. You know this teaching, right? The ones that say you will have nothing but sunshine and rainbows if you give your life to Christ?
Apparently, they’ve never read ‘Foxes Book of Martyrs’. The original followers of Jesus didn’t exactly receive what the prosperity guys are preaching… they were beheaded, crucified, boiled, thrown off buildings, and sawn in half…
However, while they may not have prospered in the way we mere humans may hope for, they certainly prospered in precisely the way that Christ promised. The storms came, but their house – their spiritual well-being – did not fall. Their foundation was firmly set on the Rock of Salvation, and the storms of this life cannot prevail.
So, don’t follow Christ to remove the storm – look to Him to see you through it!
