Nothing of lasting value can be done apart from Jesus. The context here is that Jesus is referring to bearing fruit for the Kingdom. This is the ‘doing’ that lasts forever. The vast majority of the little errands and tasks we do in our day-to-day life will not last.
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Also, in Paul's first letter to the church in Corinth, he states that without having the Holy Spirit, we cannot be shown the deep things of God that have lasting value:
However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”--
the things God has prepared for those who love him--
these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:9-10)
So, without the Holy Spirit leading us, we cannot know what God wants. And if we are not doing God’s Will, we are really doing nothing at all that matters on the scale of eternity.
