These are important words – look at what Paul is saying here…. When our minds are controlled by fleshly desires, it CANNOT submit to God’s law! There is absolutely no way I can be simultaneously focused on carnal pleasures and at the same time be thinking about glorifying God.
Clearly, we should stop allowing our flesh to control our minds – but it’s not that simple, is it? We are wrapped in flesh, and this flesh has a sinful nature that has come down from the very first man to ever wear it.
And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. (Romans 7:18)
Of course, on our own, we are unable to separate ourselves from the sin that so quickly drags us down. But again, looking to the Apostle Paul for the right words, we can indeed find the victory our souls long for.
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 7:24-25a)
Thanks to the work of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary, we can find freedom from this sin! It is only through Him and the blood that He shed for us that we can find victory - and only through His victory that we can move our minds from the fleshly to the spiritual.
