I’m not going to pretend to know the spiritual status of someone that I’ve never met and only read occasional stories about – I am not their judge. But it does serve as a reminder that there are those on this earth who seem to have it all, that when looked at from the eternal perspective actually have nothing.
By your hand save me from such people, Lord,
from those of this world whose reward is in this life. (Psalm 17:14)
In Psalm 17, David speaks of people that live only for today – for the riches and glory that this life can bring. These are people who are ‘looking out for #1’ and are unconcerned of the things of God. You see, it’s not really about rich or poor, unknown or celebrity – it’s about God. You can be rich and famous and have your heart set on the things of God, or on the things of this world. After all, King David became incredibly rich, famous, and powerful; yet what did God say about him?
God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ (Acts 13:22)
We know David was far from perfect, but his heart was in the right place – and ultimately whether we live to be 100 or die tomorrow, that is what matters.
As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face;
when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness. (Psalm 17:15)
