In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
By my reckoning, there have been a total of 3 ‘normal’ human beings that have existed. Adam and Eve before the Fall, and Jesus of Nazareth. Think of it – Adam was made precisely as God intended, and with none of the baggage that comes from being in an already broken world with hundreds of generational mishaps and genetic screw-ups. Eve was then created with Adam’s 'normality' as her starting point.
Of course, we all know the story… Adam and Eve took one of the best things God gave them – freewill – and turned it inward to themselves instead of outward towards their Creator. By using their freewill for selfish reasons, they took the first step in the long and often painful journey to where we find ourselves today. And normal didn’t show its face again until Jesus stepped off His Throne to come show us how life is supposed to be lived.
For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:17)
So, while we live on this earth, the closest any of us can really get to ‘normal’ is to accept and follow the One who made us. Living in Christ allows us to have daily victories over the sin that pulls us away from who we were meant to be, and slowly inches us closer to the image of God that we are meant to reflect.
And on the beautiful day when we are finally brought to live in His Kingdom for all eternity, we will finally and truly know what it is to be normal.
It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. (1 Corinthians 15:52)
