Then again, sometimes it is all too clear that time has been wasted. For example, have you ever plopped down on the couch and started flipping through TV channels looking for something good to watch, only to discover an hour later that there isn’t anything worth watching? This could potentially be considered a waste of both time and money – time wasted flipping through channels, and money wasted sending a monthly payment just to get boring and inane programming sent to my television.
So it seems to me that the main ingredient between ‘waste’ and ‘spend’ is whether something worthwhile or useful is returned. I waste time watching bad TV programming, because I get nothing worthwhile in return. I have not wasted time at the line for Hillsong or my local Voting precinct, because something of worth (a worship experience or vote on important candidates / issues and feeling of accomplishment) is returned.
Something that is never a waste is spending time or money in God’s economy. Whether reading His Word, helping the needy, or giving to further the work of His Kingdom – time and money here is not only spent wisely, but reaps a huge return! So dwell on the things of God, ask for His Will to be shown to you, point people to His Son so they can also enjoy this most valuable of activities!
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)
