While I don’t claim to know where this started, a guy can speculate… perhaps it all stems from an obscure verse from one of the Old Testament prophets:
And the Lord will send a plague on all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. On that day they will be terrified, stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will fight their neighbors hand to hand. (Zechariah 14:12-13)
Does this sound familiar? Walking corpses, rotting flesh…. And apparently those of us that are around at that time will be engaged in hand-to-hand combat with them! So, the question has to be asked – why would God threaten us with such a horrible plague?
This all comes from statements that Zechariah (through God’s inspiration) is making about the ‘Last Days’, a.k.a. the ‘End Times’, a.k.a. the ‘Day of the Lord’. God gives us several glimpses into the future in His Word, and here He says that ‘all the nations’ will fight against Jerusalem. In fact, they won’t just fight against Jerusalem, but they will defeat them badly. However, this is a short-lived victory for these nations…
Then the Lord will go out to fight against those nations... (Zechariah 14:3a)
It does not take a prophet to predict what happens next… as always, God wins! The Great I Am returns Jerusalem to safety.
And Jerusalem will be filled, safe at last, never again to be cursed and destroyed. (Zechariah 14:11)
God guarantees that He will return His City to safety, and that He will then heap a frightening and nearly incomprehensible plague on all those that attacked Jerusalem. So, are zombies in the bible? Yeah, who knows? But if you are a fan of “The Walking Dead”, perhaps you should go read Zechariah!
Either way, surely the writer of Hebrews had it right when he said:
It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31)
