“I would be lying down in peace;
I would be asleep and at rest
with kings and rulers of the earth,
who built for themselves places now lying in ruins” (Job 3:13-14)
Job recognizes a great truth. Even the wealthiest and mightiest men of earth ultimately build only ruins. There is nothing of this world that is eternal. The palaces and castles of old turn to rubble sooner or later. So will that brand new house and fancy car (I better stop before this turns into a country song).
Only the things of God are eternal. And what is of God on this earth? Our souls. You and I are eternal – down in the deepest part of us we know this truth, though some try hard to deny it. Can you see another person’s soul? No, you can't. Our human eyes aren't built to see the eternal.
The truth is, all the eternal things are not visible on this earth. Our souls are eternal – God is eternal – Love is eternal. What is visible is passing away – everything visible will someday be ‘lying in ruins’. Knowing this should lead us to focus on the invisible and eternal things that matter.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)
