I tell my kids that people who use foul language all the time basically just need to expand their vocabulary. I believe using creative words instead of default cursing is a sign of a well-read and well-rounded person. It can also make it a lot more fun!
However, you don’t have to use difficult or hard to understand words – simply something that isn’t offensive will do nicely. Here are a few fun examples I’ve heard (and used):
Fudgesicles!
Oh, applesauce!
Well, butter my beans!
Ah, Cheez Whiz!
Okay, that’s enough food-related ones - it's starting to sound like I’m creating a grocery list...
Here are some more:
What the diddly-doo?
Well, I’ll be dipped!
Sure, they are silly – but isn’t that better than something that makes the elderly sad, children act bad, and parents mad?
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. (James 3:9-10)
We should be working hard to set an example, and our speech is one of the outward expressions of our inside thoughts. I know from personal experience that changing everyday speech is difficult. Between the miscreants I spent my time around as a youth, and my time in the military, my language was just awful… Even after over 20 years of working on it, I still slip sometimes.
How can we ever do it? Here’s an idea:
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. (1 Peter 1:13-14)
