and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
This is a beautiful verse from a beautiful Psalm, and it shows clearly that God works well with broken vessels. You see, God is into omelets instead of hard-boiled eggs! You break some eggs and scramble them up really well, add in some goodness (for me that would include diced ham, mushrooms, spinach, and smoked Gouda), and you can make yourself a great breakfast.
While I don’t have anything specific against hard-boiled eggs, they just can’t compete with a good omelet (and don’t even get me started on deviled eggs, whose evil influence can only be countered by a big slice of angel food cake - as you can see, my diet is all about balance. But I digress…).
When you have come to the end of your rope – when you are broken; completely and utterly lost and defeated – you are as near to God as you will ever be. David tells us here that God comes toward your brokenness – He heads toward the mess; inserts Himself into the middle of your chaos. When you are completely undone, He is waiting to add some Goodness and make you something special!
And when God has turned your brokenness into something good - like a Master Chef breaking eggs to make His signature omelet - you may just find yourself singing along with Isaiah:
"See, God has come to save me.
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
The Lord God is my strength and my song;
he has given me victory.” (Isaiah 12:2)
Become broken and let God in - don't let life make you hard-boiled!
