Is it really better to give than to receive? I would suggest it depends on what is being given, or received. All gifts are not the same, you know! The gift of a smile or a handshake can be both given and received with joy. The gift of sharing monetary or material blessings to one in need blesses both the giver and recipient.
Naturally, I understand the intent of the saying – the joy of making others happy is certainly preferred over selfish greed in getting more ‘stuff’ for yourself. This is absolutely true! But still... there are gifts, and then there are GIFTS…
There is a gift that we have all been given, that some will sadly never unwrap.
The best Gift ever stepped down from His throne, wrapped Himself in human flesh, and gave Himself - to be slowly and painfully unwrapped and hung on a wooden cross – truly the very first Christmas tree. What a horrible, beautiful ornament He made, hanging there, to complete Love’s journey and secure a Victory for all who call on Him!
Because of that great and terrible accomplishment, there is an eternal gift inside each of us. We must choose to unwrap the Gift of eternal life, or remain forever clothed in death. Receiving this gift leads to an unmatched blessing for the receiver, and gives well-deserved honor and glory to the One who gave it.
This Christmas, take a moment to remember what we are celebrating. The Gift was given once for all – won’t you receive it?
