Yet he was far – so very far - from perfect. His lust for women was well-known, and he even took advantage of those closest to him because of his lust and thirst for power. He was truly a man of great power... and even greater sin.
Though the nation clearly prospered, there were still those who fought against him. Not only from other nations, but from within. In fact, some of those thought to be among the most trusted turned against him, resulting in an attempted coup that risked tearing the nation apart.
Even with nearly constant turmoil and strife – even with all the shameful, sinful actions – there was no denying the good things he accomplished for his nation. And to this day, King David is considered one of the greatest rulers in all of history.
King David was a great king, not because he was perfect, or even good. David was a lying, adulterous, murderer! But David humbled himself before God, repented, and tried his best to follow God’s way for him and his people. That is the difference between a great ruler and an evil one.
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin. (Psalm 51:1-2)
