In God’s way, He also uses the one who is clearly weaker – in wisdom and in will – to bring shame on the strong.
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
There have been many brilliant minds that did not believe in Jesus as their Savior and King. It is truly sad that someone of great mind is unable to see what a dummy like me can find so obvious. This is much like me and the pickle jar. Although science and physiology tell me I’m clearly the stronger of the two, it was still opened by the ‘weaker vessel’. How does this happen?
With the pickle jar, it might be as simple as her applying pressure in a different place or way, much like a weaker person using a lever can lift far more than a stronger person can deadlift on their own. I’m trying to brute-strength it open, while she finesses it.
In our faith, it may be similar – when a person depends on themselves - their wits, wisdom, and ‘strength’ to understand the world - they leave no room for the Almighty One to come in and save the day. It is only when we have come to the end of ourselves that we are weak enough to allow Another to enter the equation.
Of course, there are also brilliant minds that have thankfully accepted Jesus as Lord. I would contend that they had to come to a place where they recognized they could not open that jar for themselves.
For each of us, there are things inside our own jars that we cannot get to – sin and selfishness are fermenting in there. Until we give up and give in to Someone who can twist the lid open and empty the jar, it cannot be filled up with something (and Someone) better.
