Have you noticed that our God prefers verbs? He isn’t looking for statues, but worshippers – not seat-dwellers, but servers. You must seek to find; you must forgive, to find forgiveness; sacrifice to find joy; work for the Lord to find peace; count your blessings to find contentment.
This requires action – verbs! It doesn’t say “think and you will find”. Your thoughts (if they are anything like mine) are all over the place…. I think about wonderful things, occasionally something that I think is really brilliant, and often things that would embarrass me in mixed company… But my actions show what I choose to move beyond words and into verbs.
God knows that we are human – so he knows our thoughts include flesh as well as spirit. While we should certainly strive to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”, as the Apostle Paul states in 2 Corinthians, we also must recognize that our actions will show the world what our hearts and minds are focused on.
Even as we initially accept Christ into our hearts and minds and souls, we are commanded to follow it with action:
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16)
Believe AND be baptized - action! Everything we are in Christ is shown to the world through verbs:
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20a)
Go – Make – Baptize – Teach
We are meant to be the action heroes of our own story - showing the world what it means to abide in Christ - not just watching someone else from the bleachers. So let’s go!
