Scriptures says that Solomon was the wisest man ever. God appeared and spoke to him personally – twice! Still, with all that going for him, he turned away from God because of his love of women.
Luckily, God did not completely give Solomon over, but only for a time. Later in his life, the wise King seems to have returned to his first love, as he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes.
To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. (Ecclesiastes 2:26a)
Solomon is writing of himself here – God gave him wisdom, knowledge, and happiness. He left all of that for sin. Because of his sin, God broke his kingdom into pieces, and many years of turmoil were the result.
So, what did this wise king discover through his life? This famous man went from a close and special relationship with his Creator, to forsaking his God for the lusts of this world, and then back again. What final nugget of wisdom does he leave, as he closes out this book of his success and struggle?
Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.
For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
