Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,
mere mortals that you think of them?
They are like a breath;
their days are like a fleeting shadow. (Psalm 144:3-4)
We are like grass or flowers that bloom today and are gone tomorrow.
The life of mortals is like grass,
they flourish like a flower of the field;
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more. (Psalm 103:15-16)
Sound depressing? It shouldn’t be, and let me tell you why…
There is a God who created each of us – individually knitting us together. Our Creator cherishes every one of His Creations. A sparrow or a simple flower cannot exist or perish without Him noticing.
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:29-30)
This same God that cares for birds and flowers has given you and I a special place in His Creation. God – Creator of all – has given only one of His creatures the highest position in His Creation – and it is us! Our Lord not only holds us above all the plants and animals but has given an even more incredible gift to us. He has created us in His Image!
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Nowhere else in the vast earth did God put this incredible mark. We are keepers of the very image of God! So yes, we may be shadows, but our shadows hold the reflection of our King! We may be wisps of air, gone in a moment, but we are filled with His Holy Breath!
Of all the gifts that are thrown around at this time of year, do not lose sight of the most important one. We are made in the image of God, and only when we bow down and accept His Lordship over us will we know the peace and joy that Jesus Christ can bring.
Merry Christmas!
