Moses was on the mountaintop with God for 40 days. During that time, he was in close communion with the Lord. The people below got tired of waiting and decided they should just worship something other than God, if he wasn’t coming back.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.” (Exodus 32:7)
When God told him to, Moses came down to the evil generation with the very Words of God in his hands (the two tablets with the Ten Commandments).
Moses saw that they were worshiping a golden calf made by human hands, and that the head priest (Aaron) had gone right along with them. He threw down and broke the words of God because of the sin of the people. Moses then returned to God and interceded to prevent the Lord’s complete destruction of them all, pleading for his people.
Fast forward a few thousand years. People were again worshiping incorrectly, led by the priesthood (Pharisees and Sadducees). The Father send their Deliverer down. Jesus wasn’t just carrying God’s Word, but was the Word of God!
The Word of God was broken on the cross for the sins of the people, and then Jesus rose and returned to God, where He intercedes and pleads with the Father for all His people.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
The remarkable Word of God, ladies and gentlemen!
