John the Baptist said that he was not worthy to stoop down and untie Jesus’ sandals like a slave might have done for their master in his day. And who could say they are worthy? But what did Jesus have to say about John?
“Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” (Matthew 11:11)
The Lord said there was nobody on earth greater than John the Baptist; so where does that leave us? It leaves us exactly where you think it does – unworthy!
When I compare myself with one of the giants of the faith like John the Baptist, or Peter, Paul or any of the Apostles, there is no way I can feel worthy. But what Jesus says is that even the most unworthy of us - those of us who can barely squeak by and make it into heaven with our minuscule faith - will be greater than a giant of the faith like John the Baptist was when he was here on earth.
When we recognize our unworthiness and accept the only One who is worthy to take our sins, we are elevated into select company. We become one of the many unworthy and faithful who willingly bend our knee – yes, we will gladly stoop before our Master.
At the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11)
