Being a prophet isn't easy… There you are minding your own business when God speaks to you. Next thing you know, you’re taking your dirty underwear and burying it like kimchi.
Then the Lord gave me another message: “Take the linen loincloth you are wearing, and go to the Euphrates River. Hide it there in a hole in the rocks.” So I went and hid it by the Euphrates as the Lord had instructed me. (Jeremiah 13:3-5)
Okay Lord – you want me to stuff my dirty underwear in a hole and leave it there… kind of weird, certainly gross, but whatever you say…
A long time afterward the Lord said to me, “Go back to the Euphrates and get the loincloth I told you to hide there.” So I went to the Euphrates and dug it out of the hole where I had hidden it. But now it was rotting and falling apart. The loincloth was good for nothing. (Jeremiah 13:6-8)
Big surprise, it was good for nothing… and it would probably smell worse than kimchi when it was uncovered!
When God is looking for an object lesson, the prophets were His main go-to. He asked them to stuff underwear in a hole (Jeremiah), walk around naked (Isaiah), and marry a harlot (Hosea) – and that’s just a sample! These incredible men were walking testaments for the Lord, and they each gained eternal rewards for their earthly struggles.
Listen for God to speak to you, and don’t be surprised if He asks you to get out of your comfort zone. Just remember to wear clean underwear… just in case...
