While I’m exercising my body, I’m using up and tearing down my muscles. But the act of doing so actually makes them stronger and able to do more later. Similarly, the act of giving is ‘tearing down’ my financial or material holdings, but in doing so I am building up my heavenly rewards and bringing praises to my Lord.
As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.”
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. (2 Corinthians 9:9-10)
We all know the verse that says it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35), but do we really understand why this is true? One reason is the good it does our own souls to be givers. Paul also tells us the generosity we show to others will bring more praise to our Heavenly Father. Count your blessings every day, but also share them out so they can be multiplied!
Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. (2 Corinthians 9:13)
