It started in Babel. Men trying to make ‘heaven on earth’. Of course, that didn’t work out so well…
So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. (Genesis 11:8)
Later, we tried again by returning to basically the same place and building Babylon. The ‘great city’ that once ruled the known world.
Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. (Daniel 4:29-31)
Silly humans…. trying to bring heaven on earth and reveling in their own power…. We never learn! And still we continue. Listen to politicians and other so-called ‘leaders’ and see if they don’t talk about what man can create and accomplish. The only time they bring God into the conversation is when they are trying to secure the evangelical vote.
Man is surely stubborn and always trying to reach heaven by his will, instead of bowing the knee and accepting His Will. Just as in times past, God will reign. And once again, He will destroy every Babylon we create.
I will punish the world for its evil,
the wicked for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty
and will humble the pride of the ruthless. (Isaiah 13:11)
Only the Mighty King and Creator of all things can bring Heaven to earth – and He will do it in His time, not ours.
