As wonderful a gift as love is, our human condition is sorely inadequate – yes, I would even say unable – to handle life with nothing but love while we are a part of this earth.
I submit to you that if humans only had love and mercy and grace and forgiveness - if we never suffered the consequences of our decisions and choices - we would be the most apathetic and horrible of creatures.
Let’s be honest for a minute. If you knew that no matter what you did – whether it was good or bad, or whether you knew it was wrong or right – you would never have to deal with the consequences. If whomever was affected by it would completely forgive you and it would not change your relationship with them in any way… Can you honestly say you don’t believe that would affect your choices?
As humans on this earth, many times we choose to do what’s right because it’s right. But if we are honest with ourselves, there are times we choose to do what’s right because we don’t want the risk of repercussions that may come as a result of doing what we really want to do. And unfortunately, there are times when we know what’s right and still don’t do it.
Truth be told, it’s knowing the consequences of our decisions that often determine our path. If I could eat hot fudge brownie sundaes every day, and never have to eat another kale salad, and not suffer any ill effect in doing so…. Well, I think it’s safe to say the kale industry would be in a heap of trouble!
So why will it be any different in eternity? Because this earth is full of good and bad, and we have temptations and desires for both the pure and the corrupt that surrounds us. Eternity with God is only good, and our desires will be only pure – because our God is Good and He is Pure!
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8)
