When the people of Nineveh listen and believe the message he brings and change their ways, Jonah gets upset!
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. (Jonah 3:10 – 4:1)
What arrogance to sit there hoping for calamity to fall, getting upset when God doesn't "do something about that"!
Sound familiar? Do we not often do the same thing? Wondering why others don’t “get what they deserve”? Or getting upset that God shows mercy to those who we feel He shouldn’t? What arrogance, indeed!
God tells Jonah to go and tell the people His message. God also commands us to go and tell people His message! How many of us do what is asked, and how many of us turn away and go into hiding from this world that so desperately needs to hear God’s message?
Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. (Jonah 4:5)
Like Jonah, do we sit in the shade complaining about the jacked-up world, or do we go and tell so that some can be saved?
