Who are you trying to please? I think most people are looking to please themselves first and foremost… in fact, I would argue that even many Christians are hoping that what pleases them pleases God as well – you know, kill two birds with one stone...
But what pleases God? Well, glorifying His name, and listening to His Son.
But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” (Matthew 17:5)
So we listen to His Son – and what did Jesus say?
“If you love me, obey my commandments.” (John 14:15)
There it is. To please God means we have to do things that seem backwards – love enemies, bless those who curse us. Are we pleasing ourselves when we do this? Probably not, if we’re honest.
You see, there is a huge difference between being pleased, and being fulfilled. When I please God, I am fulfilled. And fulfillment leads to contentment. So pleasing God with my words and actions will fill the ‘God-shaped hole’ in my heart, and I will be a fulfilled and content man.
And do you know what happens when I’m content and fulfilled? Yep, that’s a pleasing proposition!
