These words of the Lord were spoken by Moses to Joshua, and to all the people of Israel – God’s chosen. In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were shown mighty wonders by their God. They were an example to us – the people of the New Testament. And as God performed amazing feats to deliver His people then, so He does even today.
In the Old Testament, our God was more apt to show Himself through signs and wonders to the collective – pillars of fire, smoke and thunder on a mountaintop, plagues wiping out the sinful… External power to whole groups of people.
In the New Testament, we have a more personal experience. Jesus came and did signs and wonders as well, but He spoke, healed, and saved individuals instead of nations. His mission was to the ones who would carry His Name around the world, to Jews and beyond.
But our Old Testament and New Testament God is one and the same! In the Old the shadow was played out with the Jewish people, and in the New it becomes personal - an invitation to each and every one of us. Jew and Gentile alike can accept this invitation today and become one of the people of God!
Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. (John 14:23)
