Well, that’s possibly just me being weird, but there is a very important ‘nothing’ that we should be focusing on… in fact, the Apostle Paul talks about ‘looking at things that are not seen’ in his second epistle to the church in Corinth:
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:17-18)
The things you and I think of as ‘reality’ are just the temporary trappings of this world. None of it is as real as the things that are all around us but not visible by human eyes. Did you know that right now you probably have both good and evil spirit-beings within your reach? There are both demons harassing you and angels protecting you throughout your life – you never see them, but I wager that if you think about it, you can identify times in your past where you have felt under siege, or felt peace, without understanding the reason why.
Not only are we surrounded by beings that would make Narnia and Lord of the Rings characters look dull by comparison, but we also don’t see all the colors and shades that are ‘real’, I believe. Look at what Paul said in the most famous chapter from his first letter to the Corinthians:
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Mirrors in Paul’s time were not the same as the ones we have today – they were probably more like looking into a shiny metal serving tray, where the reflection is you, but not exactly you, if you know what I mean… He’s saying that this is the world around us now – everything we see is nearly what it is; not precisely as it was meant to be… When believers in Christ come into His Glory, and the earth is made new, we will see everything around us fully, completely.
The very next thing Paul says after telling us to focus on things unseen is this:
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2 Corinthians 5:1)
This “house not made with hands” is referring to our heavenly home, and when Jesus had completed His work on earth 2000+ years ago, He told us that the builder of this heavenly dwelling was none other than the great Carpenter Himself.
Let me leave you with this thought I heard recently: It took just 6 days for God to create everything we see around us…. He’s been gone “preparing a place for us” for over 2 millennia now… what kind of place do you think He is preparing for us?
