Ernie Brace was captured in Laos in 1965 while flying supplies for USAID (United States Agency for International Development). He spent almost eight years as a POW – the longest time of any Vietnam POW.
It’s difficult to imagine living through years of constant torment. For most of us, it’s hard to imagine going through one full 24-hour day of it! How would you respond after 24 hours? After a week? A month?
The Prophet Habakkuk has the right answer:
Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior. (Habakkuk 3:17-18)
How do we find joy under the darkest of circumstances? By remembering and holding on to the promises of our Lord!
But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
