Do you ever wonder why? Why didn’t God send Jesus to judge the world? Sure, He came to save us, but wouldn’t judgement be necessary first, to show us what we were being saved from?
Yes, it is necessary, but the Ten Commandments already took care of that, didn’t they? We have a nice list of ‘Thou shalt nots’ that humans had spent thousands of years either breaking or ignoring!
Let’s do a quick status check, shall we? Have you ever lied? Have you ever envied or wanted something that didn’t belong to you? Have you ever taken anything that wasn’t yours? Yeah, me too…and that’s only 3 of 10! The Bible says that if you break even one of these commandments - just one time – you are too sinful to be around God.
So anyone that was paying attention knows they are hopelessly separated from God. Since Heaven is eternity with God, and we are too sinful to be anywhere near God, there are only two options. Either Heaven will be utterly empty of humans, or God has to make a way for us to be able to be there.
His answer was to ask His Son to step down from His Throne, and come save us. Jesus had to take on human flesh and all the physical and emotional turmoil that comes with it. Not only this, but He had to grow and live in a miserable cesspool of society, surrounded by all the trials and temptations of this world, and do it all without ever sinning.
He was tempted. He was angered. He was thrown trick questions. He was unjustly condemned, beaten, and crucified. He took it all without sinning – all of it!
What was His reward? He got to return to His Father, but this time, He was bringing a big crowd with Him! We all can only join in on this if we are without sin – we can only be without sin if we give it all to Jesus.
Give Him your sin – let Him take it… After all, He already did! When He was hanging on that cross, with His very lifeblood dripping to the ground, He was taking the punishment that you and I deserved for all our sins. If we accept His sacrifice, the Father sees our bill has been paid in full. That, my friends, is our all access pass to the Promised Land!
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:4-6)
