“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
I find it interesting that before this famous phrase is quoted in Hebrews, the context is laid around the love of money. This is just as Paul says elsewhere to his protégé Timothy:
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:10)
Money, of course, isn’t the problem… we are. If it isn’t money, then it’s other material things, or it’s sex, or food, or just about anything except God. The thing is...we can enjoy all of the things of this world that we are blessed with – whether money or stuff. What we unfortunately fail to do, however, is keep things in perspective.
God, and all the good things that you can’t put a price on, need to be far higher on our list than money or the things of this world. After all, what is money without love, or food without family? They are an empty and sad substitution for the truly important things in this life.
Money - don’t love it and spend your life chasing it. Find contentment in Christ, and you will discover that whatever money or material blessings you have will suddenly be enough.
