The magistrates couldn’t accuse Daniel based on existing statutes and laws so instead they had to go change the laws. You’ll notice that Daniel’s actions did not change but were suddenly against the law and supposedly deserving punishment. Daniel was thrown to the Lion’s for doing the same thing he had always done. The key here is that Daniel knew there was a chance of punishment, but refused to deny his Lord.
As Christians, we can learn a lesson here. The end times (also spoken of in the book of Daniel) will be like this. We will be suddenly on the wrong side of the law because we worship Christ.
He (Antichrist) will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time. (Daniel 7:25 emphasis mine)
The question is: will we stand strong in our faith regardless of the possible repercussions as Daniel did, trusting God to let His Will be done; or will we bow to the new rules and let our faith and salvation slip away.
To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. (Revelation 3:21)
