The first fruit to get any attention was in the garden of Eden. This of course, was the fruit hanging on the 'tree of the knowledge of good and evil’. This is the same tree that God had explicitly told Adam and Eve they could not eat from.
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)
We know now, of course, that Adam and Eve ate in disobedience to cause the fall of man. Unlike the fruit they chose – and what we would choose for ourselves - there is a Fruit that was chosen from the beginning of the world.
Our Lord and Savior Jesus was the fruit of God who was hung on a tree. While the first fruit was chosen in defiance and gave death, this is a life-giving fruit! Through His body being hung on the cross, and His blood being spilled, Jesus gave us the opportunity to rise again. That is worth a big AMEN!
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:13-14)
Choosing the fruit of self - the fruit that defies God and shows we choose to be our own master - is the fruit that destroys. Choosing the Fruit from Heaven - the Son of God that was hung for our sins - is the Holy Fruit that rebuilds, restores, and gives life.
But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23)
