“For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my loving kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord who has mercy on you. (Isaiah 54:10)
In the last days, Isaiah's proclamation from the Lord will come true. Revelation 16:18 says, “And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.”
I took my two daughters to see “San Andreas” last weekend, and the effects were amazing. It really looked like the entire Western Seaboard was being completely devastated by a massive earthquake. However, even the size and scope of what they were depicting in that movie does not compare to what is going to happen when God’s Wrath comes down in the end times.
It says that in that day, the earth will shake so severely that the city of Jerusalem will be “divided into three parts”. And about those mountains it says: “Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”
I love that phrase – “and the mountains were not found.” What is this, some sort of cosmic hide and seek? As Isaiah predicted about 2700 years ago, “the mountains may depart, and the hills may be removed”.
It’s going to be a very frightening time, my friends. There is no doubt that the God who saves is also the God who judges, and when His Wrath comes down on mankind, there will be nowhere to hide. The only chance any of us have is to recognize that God is exactly who He says He is. A God of Judgment, a God of Wrath – and thankfully, He is also a God of Mercy and Grace!
This is why we have the very important word in Isaiah, “…but…” This is the lifesaver that is thrown to each and every one of us that are drowning in our sin; suffocating under the weight of the mountains of selfishness, lust, and greed; being consumed by our own self-righteousness and human misery.
He is the God of throwing down both the physical and emotional barriers – the earthly mountains that we find ourselves trapped on, where the air grows thin from our unforgiven sin and shame. He will bring down those mountains for each and every one of us that reach out to Him… and He will show us the love that we always knew deep in our souls was there, but could never find on our own.
Thank God Almighty, the mountains were not found; they have fled away, they have departed, but…. Oh yes, thank you Lord, my gracious Heavenly Father, but... “but my loving kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of peace be removed.”
