“But my work seems so useless!
I have spent my strength for nothing and to no purpose.
Yet I leave it all in the Lord’s hand;
I will trust God for my reward.” (Isaiah 49:4)
Being a worker in the Kingdom of our Holy God isn’t an easy job… Prophets and disciples throughout history have been ridiculed, ignored, rebuked, beaten, imprisoned, tortured, and sometimes killed. It seems people often think the sun should always shine on the Christian, but the reality is that the promise for peace is for the next world, not this one.
Our work here may sometimes seem useless, but we need to keep doing the Lord’s work and trust in Him to accomplish His Will. This is one of many reasons why I am thankful that God is ultimately in charge, and not man. We want immediate gratification, but God is playing for keeps in a picture much bigger than what we can see.
The work we do here isn’t meant to be the end all of the matter. We are simply to help spread God’s Word and bring a small slice of heaven to earth. This sometimes thankless job continues to reveal work of the Savior in a fallen world. And like the prophet Isaiah who felt useless, God will also strengthen us to do His good works:
The Lord has honored me,
and my God has given me strength.
He says, “You will do more than restore the people of Israel to me.
I will make you a light to the Gentiles,
and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:5b-6)
Don’t give up hope, but continue in the Kingdom work until God brings you into His eternal presence.
