Judgement is a problem because it puts us in the role of ‘Judge’, which we are wholly unqualified for. If you ask me to take out a ruler and judge if a 2x4 is 2” deep it’s okay, because I own a ruler (but of course that doesn’t make me the ruler). But if you ask me to judge whether a person is in or out of alignment, then I can only point to the Ruler who measures us all.
But beyond that, a better use of my time is to turn things around. If I see a person acting or speaking in a way that I find inappropriate, I should look at myself and determine if I’m missing an opportunity to see an unidentified blessing.
Does this action or language come from a lack of understanding? Thank God that I’ve been granted some level of wisdom in that area. Perhaps the work or word of another shows a deficiency in their ability for certain tasks. Thank God I’ve been gifted with an ability that I can use to glorify Him.
Regardless of the external reason, every opportunity to judge should be instead an internal opportunity to find one more reason to praise God.
So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. (1 Corinthians 4:5)
