God made music, and I believe He enjoys it when those that are blessed with musical skills use the talent He gave them. Clearly, music that honors God – but I believe even music that may not be blatantly ‘Christian’ in lyrics can honor Him (if the lyrics aren’t clearly depraved, of course).
What makes a song ‘Christian’ or not? I believe it is all about the lyrics. After all, while instruments can certainly make plain whether a person is blessed with talent or not, it is the lyrics that are required to truly show if God is being blessed, blasphemed, or completely ignored…
This means that (in my opinion), whether it’s a worship song by Chris Tomlin or a heavy metal tune by Theocracy, both can honor God. This also means that a country song that dishonors God is no different than a rap or death metal song that dishonors Him.
Come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him. (Psalm 95:1-2)
