It’s so easy to forget that Jesus felt all the emotions that we feel. We get this idea that because Jesus was, is, and will always be God, that somehow, he wasn’t also fully a man.
Yet He had to come here through His servant Mary; had to be born in humble circumstances; to grow into a man. Jesus had to put Himself at odds with the leaders of His day; to watch the pain and suffering all around Him.
Finally, Jesus had to go through the heartbreak of being betrayed by someone who had been with him as a friend for years; knowing this is what would send Him through the humiliation and torture of His Passion - all for us.
For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (Romans 5:10)
Jesus being God made it all possible, but Jesus being a man was necessary for the Perfect Sacrifice that saved mankind.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
